EVision Electric Vehicles Supported 24-Hour UK Chain Ferry Challenge

EVision Chain Ferry Challenge

EVision Electric Vehicles are incredibly proud to have sponsored an extraordinary group of navigators who recently set out to achieve the seemingly impossible. Provided with an all-electric Tesla Model X 100D from our extensive hire fleet, the team took on the Chain Ferry Challenge. It was a deeply personal journey to raise vital funds and awareness for a magnificent cause, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). A charity dedicated to suicide prevention and mental health support.

Overview of the Chain Ferry Challenge

The Chain Ferry Challenge required completing a route that included all seven UK chain ferries within a 24-hour window, travelling entirely in an electric vehicle.

The route covered approximately 750 miles, stretching from Cumbria in the north west of England to Cornwall in the south west, including a round trip to the Isle of Wight.

It was a challenge significantly more complex than the distance alone suggests. Ferry timetables vary depending on location, day and season, and traffic conditions can change rapidly. Charging requirements also need to be carefully managed. With EV range, charging speeds and charger availability all impacting route planning.

Extensive preparation was carried out in advance. Including analysis of ferry timetables, traffic patterns, event schedules, charging infrastructure, and EV performance data. The full route was modelled in detail to determine whether a sub-24-hour completion was achievable. Only a small number of dates in the year appeared viable.

Route and Operational Challenges

The challenge began late on 10th June with the final Windermere ferry crossing in the Lake District at around 10pm. Which was followed by an overnight drive to Norfolk.

The team reached the first major checkpoint at Reedham Ferry. Where the schedule allowed for a planned charging stop ahead of the first morning crossing at 06:30.

From that point, the team continuously optimised the route over the next 15 hours and approximately 500 miles, as every delay or adjustment directly affected the ability to stay within the 24-hour target.

Heavy traffic on major routes, particularly the M25, added further complexity and required real-time route adjustments. The team also coordinated closely with ferry operators to maintain timing, with some crossings adjusted to allow immediate boarding and minimise delays.

Ferry Coordination and Time Management

Several ferry operators supported the challenge by helping the team maintain schedule integrity where possible, including holding brief departures to allow immediate boarding. This reduced time loss during key transitions along the route.

Chain ferries at Sandbanks, Dartmouth and Torpoint also played a key role by remaining operationally ready and supporting smooth vehicle movement across crossings.

As the challenge progressed into Cornwall, the schedule tightened significantly, and the team relied on precise timing throughout the final stages of the route to achieve the outcome.

Completion at King Harry Ferry

The final crossing took place at the King Harry Ferry in Cornwall, with the team arriving shortly before the final scheduled departure needed to complete the challenge within 24 hours. The team completed the crossing in a recorded time of 23 hours, 56 minutes and 56 seconds.

This confirmed that the Chain Ferry Challenge was successfully completed within the required timeframe.

The Tesla Model X 100D

The vehicle selected for the attempt was the Tesla Model X 100D, a long-range electric SUV designed for efficiency, performance and practicality. The team started their EV hire on Tuesday 9th June, ready for their challenge the next day.

Key specifications included:

  • 100 kWh battery capacity
  • Dual motor all-wheel drive
  • Up to approximately 300 miles (depending on conditions)
  • 0 – 60 mph in around 4.9 seconds
  • Seating for up to seven occupants
  • Towing capacity available
  • Advanced driver assistance features including Autopilot

The Model X 100D was chosen due to its combination of range, fast charging capability and passenger comfort, making it suitable for long-distance UK travel with limited downtime.
