EV ACCESSORIES – JARGON BUSTER

As with a lot of things in the EV world, there are a lot of terms relating to charging cables that may not be too obvious for many. Here we will give you some helpful advice to try and simplify these terms.

TETHERED AND UNTETHERED

A tethered cable is one that is connected permanently to the charger. An untethered cable is a portable cable and is the type you would carry in your electric vehicle.

FEMALE AND MALE CONNECTORS

On untethered cables there are two ends. The end that fits into the car port is the female end of the cable and it is slightly larger than the other end. The male end goes into the charger.

CHAdeMO CHARGERS

The CHAdeMO chargers are predominantly used on Asian electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf. Asian manufacturers are moving away from the CHAdeMO type to become more compatible with Europe or America. None of the electric vehicles on the EVision fleet use CHAdeMO chargers.

TYPE 1

These cables are the golden standard on EVs in North America. Imported vehicles from the US on the EVision fleet have type 1 chargers. However, EVision provides you with a converter for European standard chargers.

TYPE 2

The type 2 chargers are the standard for Europe, including the UK. These channel AC power up to 22 kWh.

Type 2 CCS

CCS chargers are larger chargers that channel DC power and can handle much higher charging speeds. Nearly every vehicle on the EVision fleet can use the CCS charger. This type is also standard for DC charging in Europe.
