EVision Electric Vehicles sponsor the Chain Ferry Challenge
So what’s the challenge?
The challenge in detail
Across the UK, just seven vehicle chain ferries still operate, rattling and clanking their way across rivers, estuaries and lakes. As far as anyone knows, nobody has ever managed to travel on all seven within a single 24-hour period.
That’s hardly surprising. For starters, it’s an undeniably peculiar ambition. More importantly, it’s a serious logistical challenge. The route covers around 750 miles, includes a round trip to the Isle of Wight, and depends heavily on ferry timetables that make the feat impossible for much of the year. Even during summer, success is far from guaranteed. The journey passes through some of England’s busiest holiday destinations, including the Lake District, Norfolk and the South West, where traffic delays and ferry queues are commonplace. Add weekend timetable reductions, major seasonal events and the need to recharge an EV along the way, and the prospect of completing all seven crossings in a day starts to seem wildly unrealistic.
And yet, perhaps not completely impossible.
The Chain Ferry Challengers have spent countless hours studying maps, analysing timetables and calculating charging stops. For a small number of days each year, typically in early summer, the stars appear to align. With careful planning, perfect execution and a healthy dose of good fortune, the challenge might just be achievable. On 10 June 2026, this determined team will set out in a specially selected electric vehicle to attempt something that has never been done before: completing the Chain Ferry Challenge within 24 hours.
The Inspiration
The Chain Ferry Challenge is dedicated to the memory of Dan Demissie.
Dan was a close friend of the Chain Ferry Challengers and the producer of two exceptional films. Tragically, he passed away in 2019, far too soon. The challenge traces its origins to a conversation with Dan, during which they jokingly imagined a future career as daring chain ferry entrepreneurs. What began as a throwaway idea eventually grew into the wonderfully absurd adventure you see today.
