EV Market Stats in 2025: Will You Swap to an EV?

EV market 2025 - EVision

Electric vehicles (EVs) have made a remarkable leap forward in recent years. Once viewed as niche or futuristic, they are now a major part of the UK’s automotive landscape. But is 2025 the year for you to finally make the switch? With updated statistics on EV adoption, improvements in infrastructure, and flexible options for those not ready to commit, we will help you assess whether an EV suits your lifestyle.

How Popular Are EVs in the UK in 2025?

As of May 2025, there are now over 1.5 million fully electric cars on the road in the UK. This figure represents around 4.5 percent of the total number of cars in the country. A significant increase from just a few years ago. Back in 2021, the total number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) stood at just under 400,000. In just four years, the number has nearly quadrupled, highlighting the growing trust and interest in electric motoring.

In terms of new vehicle sales, 177,487 EVs have already been registered in 2025 alone. That accounts for nearly 21 percent of all new car registrations, which shows that one in five new cars sold in the UK this year is fully electric. This follows a consistent trend. With EVs having held more than 20 percent of the monthly market share for new cars throughout the past year.

Charging Infrastructure: Is It Good Enough?

A common concern for potential EV drivers is whether they will be able to find a charger when they need one. Fortunately, the UK’s public charging network has expanded significantly to meet the rising demand.

According to ZapMap, as of May 2025 the UK boasts 80,998 public charging devices located across 39,773 different sites. These devices support a total of 115,241 connectors, meaning there are multiple chargers available at many locations. In the past 12 months alone, the number of charging points has increased by 30 percent, which shows the industry is keeping pace with growing EV ownership.

The number of high-powered chargers has also seen a boost. There are now 16,259 rapid or ultra-rapid chargers (those offering 50kW or more), which are capable of significantly reducing charging times. These fast chargers make up approximately 60 percent of the UK’s public charging capacity. In May alone, 385 new rapid chargers were installed, underlining the commitment to improving access for drivers who need a quick recharge on the go.

The number of rapid charging hubs (sites with six or more high-speed chargers) continues to grow. There are currently over 650 of these hubs around the country, making longer journeys much more manageable.

How Often Are EV Chargers Used?

During the first quarter of 2025, more than 7.6 million public charging sessions took place across the UK. Around 38 percent of these sessions occurred at slower chargers, typically those under 50kW. These are often found at destinations such as supermarkets, hotels, and car parks where drivers leave their vehicles for longer periods. The remaining 62 percent of sessions used rapid or ultra-rapid chargers, which are particularly popular for drivers making longer trips or stopping at motorway services.

Fast charging points see the most activity, with some averaging up to four charging sessions per day. Slower chargers are generally used less frequently, averaging closer to one use per day, although charging sessions at these points tend to last longer.

The busiest regions for EV charging include Greater London, which accounts for around 22 percent of sessions. Followed by the South East at 17 percent and the East of England with 10 percent. These figures indicate that EV infrastructure is most developed in densely populated or high-traffic areas.

Is an EV Right for You? Pros and Things to Consider

There are many benefits to driving an EV, especially for certain types of motorists. One major advantage is the lower cost of running the vehicle. Charging an EV at home can be significantly cheaper than filling a petrol or diesel tank. Even when using public chargers, the cost can still be more affordable compared to conventional fuels.

Home charging is another strong benefit. If you have access to off-street parking, you can conveniently charge your car overnight and start each day with a full battery. For those without home charging, new on-street and workplace charging solutions are improving access.

Rapid charging has also advanced, with more high-speed chargers being installed across the UK. This makes it easier to plan longer journeys without the fear of being stranded.

In addition, there are environmental and financial incentives to consider. The government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate and other green policies support EV ownership. Tax benefits and low running costs make electric vehicles appealing not just for eco-conscious drivers but also for those looking to save money in the long term.

However, there are still some things to keep in mind. EVs tend to have a higher upfront purchase price compared to petrol or diesel cars. Although running costs are lower, the initial investment can be a barrier for some. Charging access is another factor, especially if you live in a flat or do not have a driveway.

Some people also experience concerns around range and travel planning. While most EVs now offer a range that covers daily needs, longer journeys may require more preparation and knowledge of the charging network.
