Electric Estate Cars: Why the MG5 Is Leading the Charge

Silver MG5 for blog post about electric estate cars

Electric Estate Cars are gaining serious attention. These practical, spacious vehicles offer family-friendly functionality with zero-emissions driving. Among the growing list of options, the MG5 stands out. It’s one of the few truly affordable electric estate cars on the market, and it offers real-world usability without compromising on comfort or range.

What Is an Electric Estate Car?

An electric estate car is simply a traditional estate-style vehicle powered by electricity instead of petrol or diesel. Estate cars are known for their elongated bodies, which allow for more boot space than standard hatchbacks. When electrified, they combine this practicality with the benefits of clean and quiet driving.

While SUVs have dominated the EV space, estates are catching up. For many UK drivers, especially families or those with pets, an estate car is a more sensible option. They’re lower to the ground, typically offer better driving dynamics, and are easier to park in tight spaces.

The MG5: A Unique Offering

The MG5 is currently the UK’s only fully electric estate car in its price range. It’s a game-changer for drivers who need space and range on a budget.

Priced incredibly reasonably, the MG5 undercuts many electric SUVs and saloons. Yet, it doesn’t feel cheap. It offers a refined drive, a decent spec list, and most importantly, space. You get 578 litres of boot capacity, which expands to 1,367 litres with the rear seats down. That’s enough for a pushchair, weekly shop, camping gear, or even a Labrador or two.

Range and Charging

The MG5 Long Range version offers up to 270 miles on a single charge in real world terms. For most people, that means only charging once or twice a week. Rapid charging is supported too, up to 87kW, so you can top up from 15–80% in around 40 minutes.

It uses a Type 2 and CCS combo connector, making it compatible with the vast majority of UK public chargers. Home charging with a 7kW wall box takes around 8.5 hours.

Performance and Comfort

The MG5 isn’t a performance car, but it’s no slouch. With 154 bhp and instant torque from the electric motor, it accelerates from 0–60 mph in just over 7.5 seconds. That’s more than enough for everyday driving.

Ride comfort is good, particularly on UK roads. It handles bumps well, and the suspension strikes a nice balance between comfort and control. The cabin is quiet, thanks to the absence of an engine and good insulation.

Interior and Tech

Inside, the MG5 offers solid build quality and a modern design. The infotainment system includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Trophy trim adds luxuries like heated front seats, keyless entry, and a 360-degree camera.

There’s ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. The flat floor helps make the back seats more comfortable for adults on longer trips.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re looking for Electric Estate Cars, the MG5 deserves a top spot on your list. It’s not just the only budget-friendly electric estate, it’s also genuinely good. It drives well, has a useful range, and doesn’t skimp on practicality.

It may not have the badge appeal of more premium EVs, but it delivers where it matters most. The MG5 proves that going electric doesn’t have to mean sacrificing space or stretching your budget.

Final Thoughts

Electric Estate Cars like the MG5 offer a unique blend of function and eco-friendliness. For families, commuters, and business drivers alike, the MG5 provides a smart, practical choice. As more manufacturers enter the estate EV space, MG has set a high benchmark for value and usability.

Whether you’re switching to electric for the first time or looking for something more practical than an SUV, the MG5 is well worth a look.
