Sunderland Map

When you’re visiting the North East, you can’t miss out on a trip to Sunderland. With so much to see and do, this coastal city has many hidden gems, which we’re more than happy to highlight for you now. If you’re hiring an electric vehicle in Durham, here are five things you absolutely must see in the neighbouring city of Sunderland.

The National Glass Centre

Sunderland has historically been an industrial city, so it comes as no surprise that one of the most popular tourist attractions is dedicated to this. The National Glass Centre celebrates Sunderland’s rich history with glass, showing how the Roman’s glass making technology was re-introduced here, and how that has expanded centuries later.

As well as this, visitors to the centre can, under the supervision of a professional, try their hand at glass blowing. You can even purchase a creation in the gift shop before you head home.

North East Land, Air and Sea Museum

If you’re interested in all things military, a trip to the North East Land, Air and Sea Museum is an absolute must. Placed on the site of the former RAF Usworth and Sunderland airport, the museum comprises of a former aircraft museum, military vehicles collection and the North East Electric Traction Trust.

A feature of note is certainly the Avro Vulcan B2 Bomber, which was actually flown onto the site becoming the first Vulcan to go into private collections. The museum puts on a wide variety of events every year, including heritage days and even science fiction events. Make sure you don’t miss out!

The Stadium of Light – Home of Sunderland FC

Whenever you visit a new city, the opportunity to visit a football stadium is usually on the cards, and in Sunderland it is no exception. The Stadium of Light is not only home to SAFC, but also provided the backdrop for the incredibly popular Netflix Documentary “Sunderland ‘Til I Die”.

Viewers of the documentary will understand that SAFC and the Stadium of Light sits not only at the heart of the city, but at the heart of every resident. Why not book yourself onto a stadium tour or even try and score a ticket for a home match whilst you’re visiting?

Penshaw Monument

If you’re looking to take in some local history, as well as enjoy a lovely walk out, we recommend a trip to Penshaw monument. The monument, built in 1844, is a half-size replica of the Temple of Hephaestus. It can be seen from all around the North East, and is even incorporated into the badge of Sunderland Football Club.

If you’re visiting Sunderland between Easter weekend and the end of September, you can even book yourself onto a trip up to the top of the monument. Throughout this time, a spiral staircase that resides in one of the pillars is opened to the public, though your space does need to be booked via the National Trust website.
