Are you looking to hire an electric car or van? Are you also struggling to find a rental company that has EVs in stock? Unfortunately, a global shortage of microchips has delayed the rollout of electric cars and vans across the UK.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19, the production of vital computer chips has been exacerbated by growing demand and shortages of materials. These chips are crucial to developing, not only electric vehicles, but also laptops, headphones and game consoles.
In the first four months of 2022, there has been an 88% increase in electric vehicle sales compared to the first quarter of 2021. While demand for pure electric vehicles is still soaring, lots of companies just cannot get the vehicles themselves.
What EVs are on hold?
As a result of these shortages, some electric vehicles now have a delivery wait time of up to 18 months. This has had a huge effect on manufacturers as some of their latest electric vehicles are not available for delivery. But, it also impacts those who are looking to hire an electric car or van.
As manufacturers struggle to get their hands on semiconductor chips, EV rental companies are finding it challenging to increase their fleets. While Tesla is storming ahead in sales of their Model Y, buyers could currently be waiting until late 2023 for the Tesla models S and X.
It’s often the latest, premium electric cars that have the longest delays. Models such as the Porsche Taycan, Ford Mustang Mach-E and BMW iX all have delays of over eight months. For those looking to hire an electric car or van, these kinds of all-electric models are often the most popular as they provide the largest range and top technology for competitive prices.
Whereas, other electric vehicles are easier to get your hands on. These are generally the electric models that have been out for a while, and are at the lower end of the affordability scale. These include the Renault Zoe and Vauxhall Corsa-e.
What about the UK’s best-selling electric car?
In 2021, the Tesla Model 3 was the UK’s best-selling electric vehicle with nearly 35,000 new models being registered. This also means that the Model 3 was the second most popular new car following closely behind the petrol Vauxhall Corsa.
Tesla’s official website claims that deliveries for the range-topping Model 3 Performance, which is priced at £59,990, will likely arrive between September and November 2022. A six month wait for Tesla’s most expensive Model 3. However, those looking for a Standard or Long Range Model 3 could be waiting even longer.
These models, although they provide less luxuries, are much more affordable. The Long Range model is priced at £54,990, whereas the Standard Model 3 costs £45,990. Both of these are currently due to be delivered from January and March 2023. That’s a very, very long wait for the UK’s most popular EV.
