2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range is here!

Tesla Model Y

The UK has been patiently waiting for the delivery of the Tesla Model Y since it’s launch in mid-2021. Finally, the Tesla Model Y has arrived and we’re here to give a full, in-depth review of the UK Long Range model, which is the one we stock at EVision Electric Vehicles.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, unveiled the Model Y all the way back in March 2019. We can certainly say that this model has been one of the most anticipated electric vehicles ever. The Tesla Model Y also set out to meet the wants of current EV drivers, being the small SUV of the Tesla range.

For anyone that’s forgotten, the Model Y is based on the same platform as the Model 3, but it is slightly longer, taller and bulkier than its predecessor.

Currently, there are three versions of the Tesla Model Y. A Standard Range model, Long Range model and Performance model. All versions of the Tesla Model Y are four-wheel drive, courtesy of a two-motor set-up. However, the Long Range model delivers that instant hit of acceleration that’s so familiar in Tesla models.

In terms of price, the Tesla Model Y is surprisingly one of the more affordable models offered by the American brand. The Model Y sits comfortably in between the Model 3 and the mega-expensive Model X.

Plus, it seems to be pretty on the dot in comparison to its closest competitors. The Model Y is priced in between the BMW iX3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E (both of which it can travel further than). Of course, you’ll have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network across the UK, which allows for quicker charging.

Performance and drive

While the Model Y isn’t quite as quick as the Model 3 (you can blame the extra weight for that), it still reaches 60mph in under five seconds from a standstill. The Performance model is slightly quicker, as expected, and can reach 60mph in just 3.5. Meanwhile, the Long Range model takes a minimal 4.8 seconds. In comparison, that’s much, much quicker than the Jaguar I-Pace or BMW iX3.

So, we know the Model Y is quick, but how far can it travel? Well, all versions of the Model Y have pretty good ranges on them. The Performance model is estimated to have a range of 298 miles, while the Long Range can travel 315 on a single charge.

Both of these ranges make the Model Y a really practical choice for those who travel long distances day-to-day. That’s only made better by their brilliant charging abilities. When charging with a 7.4kW charge point, you can expect either version to reach 80% charge in around 12 hours.

However, the best stats come from using the Tesla Supercharger network (of course), which can add 150 miles in just 15 minutes. Or you can wait another 15 minutes to fully charge a Tesla Model Y.

Given its size and shape, the Model Y is quite sharp and agile. There’s also a slightly higher driving position than in the Model 3, which makes it much easier and more comfortable to drive.

Innovation and interior

The Model Y’s interior looks and feels like a Tesla, where innovative tech and minimalism take centre stage. The dominant feature is the 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system that also features in the Model 3. This is standard in all versions of the Model Y.

As usual, you can control nearly the whole car with this touchscreen. In fact, the only features with physical controls are the indicators, windscreen wipers and drive selector. While some may dislike Tesla’s heavy reliance on technology, we personally love it.

The infotainment screen is super crisp and responsive, making it really easy to use. Other manufacturers still haven’t quite matched Tesla’s excellent operating system, which manages to have tons of features without being confusing.

All new Tesla models come with emergency braking, collision warning and blind-spot monitoring as standard. But the Model Y goes a step further, with some brilliant safety features, including 360 cameras fitted to the front, sides and rear to provide drivers with maximum visibility.

The Model Y also takes autonomous driving to the next level as it has Full Self-Driving capability. This means the vehicle can completely drive itself without any human intervention. This level of autonomous driving was previously illegal on UK roads, however as of 2022 drivers of the Model Y can use this feature!
