EV News: TEN new Hyundai EVs!

Korean manufacturers, Hyundai, have recently announced massive plans which could see a big jump in its focus and push for electric vehicles (EVs). The company is the newest to join the global pledge to create new greener vehicles, in an effort to curb climate change.

As of 2035, Hyundai have stated they will not be selling any vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE vehicles) in Europe. Their plans are to remove ICE vehicles from their global markets completely by 2040.

Hyundai has already taken large steps in the EV world, with several different eco-friendly models available across the globe, including the brilliant Kona and their IONIQ family

However, their newest announcement reveals plans for 10 new EVs by the end of 2022. This will include five hybrid vehicles (HEV), three all-electric vehicles (BEV), two hybrid plug-ins (HPEV) and one fuel cell vehicle.

The plans also confirmed their commitment to hydrogen powertrain developments in order to cut the use of fossil fuels.

Hyundai have developed a ‘three pillar’ approach which they believe will help achieve the desired carbon-neutrality. In their first pillar, Hyundai will focus on ‘clean mobility’, aiming for 30% of its global sales to be that of zero emission vehicles by 2030. Furthermore, they estimate that battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles could account for up to 80% of sales by 2040.

Pillar two will largely focus on ‘mobility options’, which is where their 10 new EVs come in! Whereas, their third pillar will focus on green energy and how they can develop more efficient and less pollutive ways of powering its global operations.

Hyundai’s self-driving EV!

Hyundai also presented their very own self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi at the Munich Motor Show! The vehicle has level four autonomous functionality, which means it can drive itself in all situations unless a driver takes manual control.

Throughout all of Hyundai’s  plans, the IONIQ brand will be front and centre. The rollout of their full IONIQ family will play a crucial role in expanding their EV footprint. Starting with their newest model, the IONIQ 5 which was launched in February this year. It will be the first all-electric model built on their new E-GMP. This platform enables faster charging, increased driving range, better handling and creates more interior space.

Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai, reminded us of how undeniable the challenge of climate change is. Boasting that Hyundai will commit to making “ investments in cleaner transportation and greener energy solutions to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.”

That being said, the switch to carbon-neutral motoring will come earlier in the UK. At the moment, the UK government plans to ban the sale of all new ICE vehicles in 2030, with the exception of some plug-in hybrids.
