This week the UK government has announced their plans to ensure electric vehicle public charging stations become as iconically recognisable as the red post box or black cab. With an increase in public charging points, hiring an EV will be easier than ever – meaning you can take full advantage of cheap lease deals!
At the moment, there are over 25,000 public charging stations across the UK, according to ZapMap. This is a major milestone as it means EV drivers are never more than 25 miles from a public charging station on the road.
However, the need for more EV charging points is only increasing! Statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that plug-in vehicles accounted for over one in six cars sold in July 2021. Meanwhile, the sale of both petrol and diesel cars have dropped massively over the year.

The government has assigned the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to deliver a truly British design for EV charging points. Their aim is to make charging an EV as easy as, if not easier than, refueling a petrol or diesel vehicle.
The finished design will be revealed in November at the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. The design will put sustainability at the forefront of the chargers as well as promoting accessibility for all users. It is hoped that these exciting new parge points will be seen on our streets from 2022.
This announcement follows the launch of the government’s Transport decarbonisation plan – a world-leading ‘greenprint’ which sets out the UK’s path to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “With less than 3 months to go until COP26, we continue to put the UK at the forefront of the design, manufacture and use of zero emission vehicles and their charging infrastructure, as we build back greener and call on countries around the world to similarly accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.”
On a mission to tackle climate change, the UK is calling on countries around the world to accelerate their transition to electric vehicles while phasing out the use of coal power and halting deforestation.
Rollout of these British charging stations will hopefully be more identifiable for EV drivers. It is also hoped that linking them to a classically British design will help create awareness around the transition to EVs as well as making them recognisable all over the world.
