Have you heard about the innovative sustainable road material that has been created recently? The transport industry has joined forces with the construction industry to introduce a new road material that is believed to drastically cut the quantity of waste.
What is the new road material?
The new road material has been produced from leftover scrap tyres and building rubble. In today’s world, half of the produced general waste comes from the construction and demolition industry. Around one billion scrap tyres are also wasted every year. Pairing these two products up seems like a no-brainer, if it’s going to help our economy as a whole.
Currently road material is made up of unsustainable materials, for example, quarried rock and sand. Changing the materials used will reduce the amount of wasted materials going to landfill sites. It will also increase how much we recycle as an economy.
Researchers have identified the perfect blend, which is 0.5% finely crumbled rubber and 99.5% of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA).
The advantage of using building rubble and recycled tyres will enable the mix to become more flexible, and prevent the road surface from cracking as quickly.
How else can you contribute?
Although most individuals cannot contribute personally to helping the environment in terms of road materials, everyone can still do their bit in many other ways.
Make the switch to an electric vehicle
Have you ever thought about switching to an electric vehicle, but not sure if you’re ready yet? Most people feel the same, but with the right knowledge and research anyone could be driving an EV for an affordable price.
Charge up, don’t fill up!
As of 7th August, there were 19,150 public electric vehicle charging devices available in the UK. The UK Petroleum Industry Association’s latest figures show that there are 8,046 traditional petrol stations across the UK, meaning that there are officially more than twice the amount of charging stations than petrol stations. Forget the fear of not being able to find a charge point, as this is definitely not an excuse now!
